What are the skills of Team Building?
Team building is knowing how to help individuals work as a coherent group where all members feel part of the team’s direction and accomplishments. All members have a say in developing goals and defining the steps to achieve those goals. Everyone is able to work together to accomplish the group’s goals.
If you are helping to assemble a team, you need strong communication skills. Using written and verbal communication skills, you will need to explain the company’s goals, delegate tasks, resolve conflicts between members, etc. It is important that you are able to clearly express your ideas in a way that others can understand.
In order to solve problems and make sure that each team member feels heard, you will also need to listen. You will need to understand each member’s concerns so that everyone feels considered and appreciated.
When building a team, you will have to solve problems. These can be problems related to the group’s goals. However, they can also include interpersonal problems between group members.
A team builder should help to solve both. He or she should be a mediator who can listen to both sides of a problem and help everyone get along. The goal of a team builder is to solve problems in a way that helps the team achieve its goals and keep its members functioning well.
Being a team builder often requires taking a leadership role for a team. You have to make decisions when conflicts arise, set group goals and confront team members who are not doing their best. All of this requires leadership and management.
- Aligning team goals with business objectives
- Establish a standard operating procedure
- Talent Management
As a team leader, you need to be extremely aware of your leadership style and techniques. Are they as effective as you think they are? How well are they accepted by the team you are trying to lead? Evaluate and critique areas for improvement, especially in areas that will benefit those you are leading.
Although you are responsible, the way you work may not be appreciated by those who work for you. You may have good intentions, but be sure to hold yourself accountable for correcting the course and changing your approach if necessary to ensure that you are driving from a position of strength and respectability.
Clearly define roles and responsibilities
When you successfully complete certain steps, you can then more effectively and clearly define the roles and responsibilities of your team members. Now, don’t assume that this is an easy step; in fact, you will often find that people’s ideal roles don’t match their job descriptions.
Each of your team members’ responsibilities must be interconnected and dependent on one another. This is no different from team sports, where some players are known as “system players” – meaning that while they may not be the most talented person on the team, they know how to work better within the “system”. That’s why you need to keep a close eye for talent that can assess people not only on their ability to play a particular role – but more importantly on how well they fit into the culture of the workplace (the system) and will be a team player.
For example, I once inherited an employee who was not very good at his specific job. Instead of firing him, I took the time to get to know him and used his natural talent as a strategic facilitator who could keep all the moving parts of the department in proper alignment and locked communication. This person helped our team operate more efficiently and saved the company money by avoiding the bad decisions it had previously made due to communication problems. He was eventually promoted to a Special Projects Manager position.
While being a good leader is important in team spirit, so is being a good team player. You can help build a strong team by showing the team what it means to work well as a team.
You will need to collaborate and cooperate with team members, listen to their ideas and be open to taking and applying their feedback.
- Ability to follow instructions
- Responding to constructive criticism
Be proactive with comments
Feedback is the key to ensuring that any team stays on track, but more importantly, it gets better every day. Feedback must be proactive and constant. Many leaders are inclined to wait until a problem occurs before giving feedback.
Feedback is simply the art of excellent communication. It should be part of our natural dialogue. Feedback can be both formal and informal. In fact, if it becomes too structured and rigid, it becomes difficult for feedback to be authentic and punchy.
Remember that each team is different, with its own unique nuances and dynamics. Treat them as such. No cookie-cutter approach is allowed. Allow proactive feedback to serve as the best catalyst for continuous improvement in your team.
A team builder excites the other team members to set and achieve the objectives of the project. This type of motivational energy can take many forms. Maybe you come to work every day with a positive attitude, or maybe you encourage your other teammates with positive feedback.
Another way to motivate team members is to offer incentives. These can range from bonuses and other financial rewards to extra days of fun group activities. A team builder can think of creative ways to inspire the team to do its best.
- Mentoring new leaders
- Developing relationships
- Recognizing and rewarding the group’s achievements
Acknowledge and Reward
Proactive feedback comes with recognition and reward. People like recognition, but especially appreciate respect. Take the time to give your teammates the appropriate recognition they have earned and deserve. I’ve seen too many leaders take performance for granted because they don’t believe you should be rewarded for “doing your job”.
At a time when people want to feel like they are making a difference, be a thoughtful leader and reassure your team that you are paying attention to their efforts. Being genuine in your recognition and respect goes a long way to building loyalty and trust. It organically triggers extra effort!
